I had watched the movies growing up, and I always wanted to read the books.
The Hunger Games by Suzanne Collins is a classic. These books have been turned into box office movies that have excited generations new and old. I have had the privilege to watch the movies before I read the books. While the movies and books are super similar, the book is by far better.
The first book takes place in District 12, narrated by our main character Katniss Everdeen. Katniss is a headstrong teen who never lets opinions sway her judgment. There are 12 districts that hold importance in this story. These districts are like states, and they all report to the Capital. The Capital orchestrates a ceremony called “The Hunger Games” every year. They choose one boy and one girl from each district to fight to the death against each other. The winner gets a life of peace and riches. Katniss is chosen to fight in these Hunger Games.
Katniss has been the head of her family ever since her fathers tragic dead while coal mining. She was the closest to her father, and her mothers depression forced her to become a role model for her sister. Katniss becomes the support system for her sister, Prim, when her mother checks out of reality. Initially, Prim was chosen to go to the Hunger Games but Katniss took her place in order to save Prim. Katniss has always made decisions to protect Prim, even though she slightly resents her mother for not being their for them during the death. The relationship between Prim and Katniss is my favorite relationship in the book. It shows unconditional love, and is something everyone deserves to feel at least once in their life.
This story has romance and a lot of action. I loved the relationships that Katniss gained in this book. These relationships showed that Katniss isn’t as cold as she seems on the surface. I would rate this book a solid 10/10.
