I watched the anime adaptation, and I wanted to see what the differences were between it and it's manga version.
My Hero Academia Vol. 1 is set in a world where 80% of people have superpowers, or “quirks” as the series calls it. Due to most people having these quirks, criminals who use their powers to do evil are labeled “villains”, and the government-sanctioned job of stopping these villain falls on “pro-heroes”, who use their quirks to stop the villains and save lives. The story puts a heavy focus on the #1 pro-hero, All Might, a man with overwhelming strength and always saves people with a smile on his face.
The main protagonist is a middle-schooler named Izuku Midoriya, a “quirkless” teen who still dreams of becoming a pro-hero and saving people, even though he does not have any super powers of his own. His desire to become a pro-hero mostly stems from his adoration of All Might, and his desire to one day be able to save people like him, with a smile on his face. The story starts with Midoriya’s origin story, summarizing his life before middle school, and goes on to describe his journey towards entering U.A., the #1 “hero-school” in the world.
Overall, Vol. 1 is a really good introduction to the series, with enough action to keep the reader engaged, and enough worldbuilding to keep the story grounded. Obviously, since this is the first volume, it is the perfect way to get into the series, but it is also just an all-around good read if you’re looking to start reading manga in general. In addition, the story also has an anime adaptation, so you can watch that along with reading the novel to see some of the more interesting scenes animated.
