I wanted to learn more about the history of Rome.
It’s astounding how a writer could condense the history of the first millennium of the Roman empire into a 600 hundred page book, but Mary Beard managed to complete such a feat. Without using technical jargon that might appear daunting to the reader, Beard eloquently wrote an exemplary history of the Roman empire in her book, SPQR. It’s an easy read that anyone can tackle. The book tells the story of the first millennium of Rome, which spans from the mythical beginnings of Romulus and Remus being nurtured by a she-wolf to grow into the leaders of Rome, to the rise of the empire through a series of wars. The fall of Rome is not included in this book, despite the title stating “a History of Ancient Rome”. However, besides that I have no objections with the book. I found that Beard had no bias in the pages of this book as she shared the facts fairly. It is hard to find a book about history that doesn’t have an explicit bias. I highly recommend this book to readers that want a comprehensive understanding of the rise of the Roman empire.
