Nanuet Staff Connects: Musical Instruments
Patron access to the collection
- Browsers for each instrument will be stored with the Chromebooks and Hotspots. The display stand will now be called "Library of Things."
- Patron selects browser from stand and brings to Librarian at reference desk to check out the instrument.
Checking Out an Instrument - Steps for the Librarian
1. Confirm that the patron is a Nanuet cardholder by requesting that the patron present their library card or photo ID. We will not check out an instrument to a patron by name only and confirming address. Patron MUST have either library card or photo ID.
2. Confirm the age of patron using birth date on card. If younger than 14, borrower is restricted from taking an instrument. A parent may choose to borrow an instrument for the child. If they are between ages 14 and 17, patron must take Borrowing Policy and Agreement Form home to be signed by Parent / Guardian.
2. Scan the library card to check that the patron has NANUET as home library. Fines on a card must not exceed $10. If there are fines greater than $10, patron must make a payment with circulation staff and then come back to us.
3. If patron is a Nanuet cardholder 18 or older, give them the form "Musical Instrument Borrowing Policy and Agreement." Patron should read the general rules and regulations, responsibility, and liability. It may be helpful to go over key points with the patron. Patron signs and returns the form, which is to be filed in the binder alphabetically by last name.
4. Retrieve instrument from the adult reference office. Match the instrument # in the case of Ukuleles. Bring box back with you to the reference desk since that will be used to check the instrument out.
5. Find an instrument checklist. If needed, print again from this site (to the right). Use the shelf behind the reference desk to examine the contents of the instrument case with the patron, going over where the tuners / capo are kept. One by one, go over everything the patron is borrowing based on the checklist. Note any damage on the checklist to ensure the patron is not held responsible.
6. After reviewing everything, patron signs the checklist, and librarian files in that section of the binder. You may give a blank checklist to the patron for their information.
7. For the guitar, remove the 2 humidifiers. One is under the headstock, and one is hanging between the strings.
8. Check out the instrument using the barcode on the display case. Give patron receipt and confirm that the instrument can ONLY be returned during open hours directly to a librarian at the Nanuet reference desk.
9. Put the display case browser in the "Checked out Instruments" container near the Chromebooks at reference. Return the guitar humidifiers to the rack where the guitar is stored.

Returning an Instrument - Steps for the Librarian
1. Place the instrument on the shelf behind the reference desk.
2. With the patron present, open the case and fully inspect the instrument for any sign of damage. Examples would be cracks in the wood, signs of water damage or other exposure to weather, other cosmetic marks on the exterior. If there is damage, fill out a "Report of Damage to Instrument" form and have the patron sign it. Let them know it will be reviewed by another staff member.
3. Using that instrument's checklist, confirm that all parts are being returned.
4. If no damage is noted and all parts are present, Check in the instrument using the corresponding instrument display box, located in the "checked out" container.
5. Return the instrument to the adult reference office on the metal shelving next to the refrigerator.
6. Return the corresponding browser box to the library of things display.
Note: For instruments with damage, broken strings, or otherwise needing attention and repair, fill out a "Report of Damage to Instrument" form. Leave form on Bob's desk. Leave the display box in the "checked out" container.
