RCLS: About the Ramapo Catskill Library System: ILS Migration to Koha

Announcement

RCLS and Member Libraries Upgrade Integrated Library System (ILS)

June 12, 2024 — RCLS and its 47 member libraries are excited to announce an upgrade to our integrated library system (ILS) from August 1-4, 2024. This upgrade will improve access to materials, enhance research capabilities, and amplify the overall library experience both online and in person. The new system will offer improved accessibility for all types of materials, including digital resources. Certain online library services at all 47 locations will be offline from 4 PM on Thursday, August 1, through Sunday, August 4. Services will resume on Monday, August 5.

What is an ILS?

An Integrated Library System (ILS) is a comprehensive software suite that integrates various library functions. It serves as a digital card catalog and checkout system, managing day-to-day operations such as cataloging books and handling checkouts. Often referred to as the central nervous system of library automation, an ILS efficiently tracks collections and loaned items.

Transition to Koha

RCLS will transition our ILS to Koha, the world’s first free and open-source library system. Developed with the support of libraries, volunteers, and support companies worldwide, Koha is a fully featured and scalable library management system. RCLS has partnered with ByWater Solutions, which will provide implementation, hosting, support, consultation, and development services.

What This Means for You:

  • Your library card number/barcode will remain the same.
  • Your PIN will remain unchanged.
  • Your account information will remain unchanged.

During the Upgrade:

  • Continue to access online resources such as Libby, Hoopla, and more.
  • Certain online library services, including but not limited to searching for materials, placing holds, and checking your account, will be temporarily unavailable.
  • Keep visiting your local library to participate in enriching programs, explore resources, and discover opportunities for learning and growth.

Library Hours and Operations During Upgrade:

During the upgrade, each library is adjusting its hours of operation differently, and some may be closed. Please check with your local library to confirm their hours before visiting from August 1 to August 4, 2024. We apologize for any inconvenience this may cause and thank you for your understanding and patience as we work to improve our system. For more information and updates, please contact your local library or visit their website.
