The Urban Library Trauma Study: Final Report presents the findings and recommendations of the Urban Library Trauma Study, a two year look into the issues of primary and secondary trauma in urban public librarians. The study includes a literature review, a survey, and focus groups the findings of which informed a national forum of urban public library workers from cities of different size and type across the United States. This forum was a practical design sprint with the intent of discovering workable solutions to the issues that create trauma for urban public library workers. Sources of trauma included patrons, leadership, colleagues, systemic imbalances of power, and safety. Recommendations are made for national mental health support options for library workers, trauma informed library policies, and standards for healthy library workplaces. The study took place during COVID-19 and the pandemic plays a major part in the discussion of trauma in library work especially in regards to job instability, institutional disparities between professional and paraprofessional staff, and security for library workers.
