RCLS Advocacy Committee: FAQ for Library Advocacy Day

Your Question; Our Answers

Q: What should I speak about during the meeting?
A: Policy initiatives may be found here. Consider speaking about how your library has positively impacted lives. Come with stories and images to support your statement. Funding initiatives may be found here. Consider speaking about the construction needs of the library--support this with pictures for legislators to have a clear understanding. Has your library received Construction Aid funds? Show before and after pictures regarding the impact these funds made to the library and the community.

Q: Can I bring knitting needles through Security?
A: It is recommended that knitting needles be left on the bus or in your car. Sharp objects will not be allowed beyond Security.

Q: What color should we wear? In the past, it was yellow.
A: This year's color will be navy. You do not have to wear navy--wear anything you feel comfortable wearing.

Q: Can we attend visits with legislators who do not represent our community?
A: All meetings are open to whomever would like to attend, but please allow the constituents of the legislator's service area to hold the discussion.

Q: Can I bring food with me or is there a place to purchase?
A: The food court is outside the Security. If you exit the Legislative Office Building where the meetings will be held, you will need to go through Security again. Keep this in mind when considering time. It is suggested you bring water and a hearty snack at the very least.

Q: I'm running late to get the bus early in the morning. Who should I contact?
A: Call Jen Park, Government Relations Specialist, at 845-563-3747 x286. Do not text--call only. Please note that the bus will not wait more than a couple of minutes as we have a schedule to keep.

Q: Can I leave items on the bus?
A: You may leave items on the bus, but you will not be able to access these items until we board the buses again at 3:30p.

Q: I am unable to attend Library Advocacy Day in Albany, but still want to participate. What can I do?
A: We appreciate any and all advocacy efforts from library champions! Feel free to call your elected officials to voice your support of libraries, tag them in social media posts, or email them.

Q: Are there many place to sit and relax during Library Advocacy Day?
A: There are some benches for people to relax, but much of the day is standing and walking. The rally will have seats--but get there a few minutes early to snag a chair.
