Frequently asked questions

Haverstraw King's Daughters Public Library is proud to offer e-book and e-audiobook checkouts through a service called OverDrive.

What is OverDrive? OverDrive is a service the library subscribes to for access to current popular titles in e-book and e-audiobook formats. OverDrive allows library patrons to check out e-books and e-audiobooks to use on their personal devices.

What devices can I use to read an e-book I check out from the library? There are many e-book readers and devices that work with OverDrive and allow you to check out e-books from the HKDPL at no cost. These devices include popular e-readers such as the Kindle, Nook, Galaxy Note, and iPad.

Is every title available on OverDrive? No. Many major publishers either do not allow libraries to lend their e-books or have placed restrictions on their use. Therefore, not all popular e-books are available for checkout.

Can an item be checked out by more than one person at once? No.  Just like a print book, the item can only be checked out to one person at a time.

Can a hold be placed on an e-book? Yes.

Is there a limit to the number of items that can be checked out from OverDrive?  Yes. There is a limit of eight items per library card at a time.

What is the loan period on these items? You can choose to borrow an item for 7,14 or 21 days.

How can I learn to use OverDrive to check out e-books and e-audiobooks to my device? The library offers classes to learn how to use OverDrive.  Call (845) 786-3800 x18 for more information
