Rev War Primary Documents - Search Strategies and Quick Tips

Below is a pathfinder to help you zero in on local Revolutionary War content in the Fold3. database (fee based service)

Search tips for some additional sites (these are free) include:

  • Revolutionary War Pensions (revwarny.com)
    • No index, so use Google site search string (telling Google to search within a specific website).
    • Example:   site:http://revwarny.com/  fishkill
  • Founders Online (founders.archive.gov)
    • Transcribed primary documents from several sources, including the George Washington Papers.
    • Try searching for your location or an official from your area.
  • Library of Congress Digital Collections: (www.loc.gov/collections): these contain IMAGES of some documents that are transcribed in Founders Online.

General search tip:

  • You are searching for TRANSCRIPTIONS OF HANDWRITTEN DOCUMENTS from a time when lots of people spelled phonetically!  Try different spellings and configurations.  Usually the transcriptions do NOT  "standardize" proper names, but what was written at the time.
    • Examples:
      • "Fish kill" (in quotes, if using Google or another search engine) in addition to Fishkill
      • Pokeepsie in addition to Poughkeepsie
      • Sulivan in addition to Sullivan
      • and so forth!
