For use in library only.

Image Viewers

The Interactive Image Viewer is the default viewer for all images. The viewer also has special features for specific collections such as the 1940 US Federal Census and the 1911 UK Census! See our brief video to learn more.

The Interactive Image Viewer offers high-resolution images along with intuitive tools and features:

  • Zoom In/Out and Pan Up/Down/Left/Right
    • Use the mouse scroll wheel to zoom or move up/down by checking/unchecking the option in the Tools Menu.
  • Rotate the image clockwise or counter clockwise, 90º at a time.
  • Flip the image horizontally or vertically.
  • Invert the colors
  • Print, Save, or Send the image to the user's Discoveries Page (email address required). (Learn more about these options on the Email, Print, and Save page of this guide.)
  • Switch between  the preferred image viewer and access options for loading images more quickly during the current session.
  • Jump to other images within the dataset with the by entering the page number in the box next to the total number of pages at the bottom of the page or use the Right or Left facing arrows to move backward and forward through consecutive pages.
  • Flimstrip view
    • See a series of thumbnail images of other images in the dataset; click on a thumbnail to load that image.

Ancestry® Library Edition continues to offer two Flash-based image viewers, Basic and Advanced.  Switch to these using the Tools> Switch to basic viewer option. Once in the Basic Viewer you can switch between the Basic and Advanced versions. Both viewers allow the user to:

  • Expand the image lengthwise with the “Image Only” option.
  • Print the image.
  • Adjust “Options” for selecting the preferred image viewer and options for loading images more quickly during the current session.
  • Jump to other images within the dataset with the blank “Image” box next to the total number of pages or use the Right or Left facing arrows to move backward and forward through consecutive pages.

When you switch from the Interactive viewer, the Advanced viewer is the default, unless the computer in use does not have Flash installed. The Advanced viewer is based on Adobe Flash, allowing it to work on the majority of browsers (Internet Explorer, Firefox, Chrome, Safari, and others). In addition to the above listed options, the following are available in the Advanced viewer:

·    The Zoom options allow for more precise zoom capabilities:

o   Fit Image

o   Fit Width

o   Fit Height

o   Full-size

o   Custom: Percentages of zooming from 25% to 200% using scroll wheel on mouse

  • Magnify will employ a cross-hair cursor which, by holding the left mouse button down will give a zoomed view of the area of the image where the cursor is.
  • Rotate allows the user to rotate the image clockwise in 90 degree increments.
  • Mirror flips the image horizontally.
  • ‘Print’ and ‘Save’ options give the user the opportunity to carry out either of those functions from the library. It is recommended that the user change the print aspect from Portrait to Landscape when printing census images and that the user Save to a portable flash drive that they carry with them rather than the library computer.
