eReaders and eBooks @HKDPL: Kindle

Learn how to check out library books on your eReader.

Please note that some older Kindles do not have wireless connections. For those that don't:


  1. Go to and click on “Digital Dowloads.” 
  2. Search for MP3 Audiobooks. 
  3. You can search for a specific title or author by simply typing the names in the search box and then choosing the MP3 format.
  4. Find an MP3 title that you want to checkout.
  5. Click on “Add to eBookBag.” 
  6. If the title is not available, you may choose to place a hold on the title by clicking “Place a Hold.”  You will be notified by email when the title is available.
  7. When you have added titles to your eBookBag, select “Proceed to Checkout.” 
  8. Sign in by selecting the Haverstraw King's Daughters Public Library Public Library.
  9. Enter your library card number and PIN (the last four digits of your phone number).
  10. Click “Download” and follow the prompts to open the title in the Overdrive Media Console program. 
  11. If you do not yet have the program go to
  12. Choose the Desktop version for Windows or Mac depending on the type of computer operating system you have.
  13. Overdrive Media Console will launch and you will see the title displayed in your list. 
  14. Once you have successfully downloaded all of the parts, you can plug your Kindle into your computer using the USB cable.
  15. Click “Transfer” in Overdrive Media Console to move the MP3 audiobook onto your Kindle device.
  16. You will then have to move the files into your Kindle “Music” folder. 
  17. Eject your Kindle
  18. To access your e-audiobooks on the Kindle device, press “Menu,” “Experimental,” and “Play Music.”


For Kindle Fire

Install the OverDrive Media Console App.

Be sure you have allowed installations of apps on your Kindle Fire:  

  1. From the Home screen, tap the “Quick Settings”icon and select “More."
  2. Tap “Device."
  3. Turn the switch for “Allow Installation of Applications” to the “ON” position. 
  4. Select the “Mobile” “Android” version and then tap on the linked phrase: “If your device doesn’t support Android Market, you can download OverDrive Media Console for Android from OverDrive.”
  5. Tap “Accept” on the terms and agreements page to allow the download.  
  6. Once the app setup has downloaded, a number will appear next to your Kindle Fire’s name in the upper left-hand corner of the screen (this shows your downloaded items).  Tap on the number.
  7. Locate the OverDrive Media Setup file and tap on it.
  8. This will load the app onto your Fire.  The app will appear on your Kindle’s Carousel and also on your App page.  

Go to and click on “E-book Checkout.” 

  1. Find an MP3 title that you want to checkout and click on “add to eBookBag.” 
  2. If the title is not available, you may choose to place a hold on the title by clicking “Place a Hold.”  You will be notified by email when the title is available.
  3. Select “Proceed to Checkout.” 
  4. Sign in by selecting the Haverstraw King's Daughters Public Library and typing in your library card number and PIN (the last four digits of your phone number).
  5. You are ready to download the item. ,
  6. Once downloaded, the book will appear in your OverDrive Media App.

Via Wi-Fi

  1. Go to the library's website.
  2. Go to Digital Downloads.
  3. Choose your library, Haverstraw King's Daughters Public Library.
  4. Log in, using your library card number and pin number.
  5. Search for Kindle books.
  6. Click on “Add to Cart” next to the “Kindle Book” format.
  7. Click on “Proceed to Checkout.”
  8. Click on “Confirm Checkout.”
  9. Click on “Get for Kindle,” which will take you to the Amazon site.
  10. You must log on to the Amazon site through the account that is registered to your Kindle.
  11. Click on “Get Library Book.”
  12. If your device has the Wi-Fi turned on, your title will immediately download. Otherwise, the next time you connect to Wi-Fi, the title will download automatically.


  1. Follow the instructions for downloading your Kindle Book and choose “Transfer via Computer” when prompted to do so through the Amazon website.
  2. If you have more than one Kindle device registered to your account, you will see a pop-up window asking for you to choose a device.
  3. You will be prompted to “Open” or “Save the file.”
  4. Choose “Save” and select a location on your computer that is easy to find, such as the desktop.
  5. Once the file has been saved, connect your Kindle to the computer by using the USB cable.
  6. Once you’ve connected your Kindle to the computer using a USB cable, your Kindle will appear in the same location as external USB drives usually appear.
    • For Windows users, this is typically in the “Computer” or “My Computer” menu.
    • For Mac users the drive will appear on the desktop.
  7. Open the Kindle drive.
  8. You will see several folders inside, one of which will be named “Documents” or "Books".
  9. This is the folder you will move the downloaded file into.
  10. Locate the downloaded file and copy it into the “Documents”or "Books" folder.
  11. Copy files by clicking and dragging the file to the folder.
  12. Safely eject your Kindle device from your computer and unplug the USB cable.
  13. Your content will appear on the Home screen of your Kindle.

Returning your eBooks early

  • Your books must be returned from your Amazon account. 
  • Sign into your account (using your email address and password).
  • Click “Manage Your Kindle.”
  • You will then see a listing of all of your Kindle books. Books that are checked out will be marked “Digital Library”.
  • Find the title you want to return early and click “Actions.”
  • Select “Return this Book.” (Avoid selecting “Delete from Library” because this will only delete the book from your Kindle but will not return it.)
  • Select “Yes” to return the book.
  • To then remove the book from your Kindle Library list, click “Actions”.
  • Select “Delete from Library".
  • To completely delete the item from your device, find it within your Library and toggle down so that it is underlined in the list.
  • Press the right arrow.
  • Select “Remove from Device.”
